김홍석―속옷을 뒤집어 입은 양복과 치마를 모자로 쓴 드레스

이수그룹의 문화예술 공간 ‘스페이스 이수’는 2023년 8월 23일부터 11월 10일까지 김홍석 개인전 «속옷을 뒤집어 입은 양복과 치마를 모자로 쓴 드레스»를 개최한다. 이번 개인전은 우리가 익숙히 알고 있던 미술의 형상이나 개념을 전복하는 작업들을 다양한 형식과 매체로 제시함으로써 미술은 무엇인가를 다시금 생각하게 하고 새로운 사유와 상상들을 촉발하고자 한다. 김홍석 작가의 신작과 미발표작 등으로 구성되는 이번 전시는 제도권 ‘안’에 존재하는 위계와 이분법적 대립 구도를 ‘밖’에서 탐색하고 재배치해 온 작가의 기존 작업과 연장선에 있으면서도 ‘뒤엉킴(entanglement)’이란 개념으로 확장하여 우리 시대의 복잡한 다면성을 반영하고 감각의 미술, 사유의 미술, 근대성, 현대성, 미의식 등 모든 것이 뒤엉킨 오늘날 미술의 한 단면을 이야기한다. 극사실 인체 조각, 추상 조각, 사운드 인스톨레이션, 텍스트, 회화 등 다채로운 매체의 작업들을 한자리에 모은 이번 전시는 ‘전시’ 자체가 하나의 뒤엉킨 ‘작품’으로서 새롭게 재구성되고 어떤 생각이 ‘있음(being)’에 머무르지 않고 ‘되기(becoming)’로 나아가는 과정을 제시하고자 한다.

전시 제목은 신작 페인팅 ‹사군자—231234›(2023)를 두고 김홍석 작가가 “마치 속옷을 뒤집어 입은 양복이거나 치마를 모자로 쓴 드레스와 같은 형국”이라고 묘사한 것에서 비롯되었다. 작품 제목에서 알 수 있듯이 이 페인팅은 학식과 인품, 덕이 높은 사람들 곧 군자를 비유하는 식물인 매란국죽(梅蘭菊竹)을 그린 것이다. 하지만 사군자의 유구한 역사는 모델링 페이스트(modeling paste)와 아크릴 물감을 두껍게 발랐다가 다시 표면을 나이프로 저며낸 모습으로 퇴색되고, 거기다 이 그림은 작가 자신이 그린 게 아니라 ‘코스노 믹(Kosnoh Mig)’이라는 작가의 그림을 자신의 전시에 초대한 것뿐이라며 작품의 원본성까지 문제시한다. 결국 <사군자—231234>는 역사적인 것도 현대적인 것도 아닌, 동양식도 서양식도 아닌, 전문가의 것도 아마추어의 것도 아닌, 원작자의 것도 빌려온 작가의 것도 아닌, 서로 구분할 수 없이 뒤엉킬 대로 뒤엉킨 복장을 걸친 듯한 모습으로 나타난다.

«속옷을 뒤집어 입은 양복과 치마를 모자로 쓴 드레스»전에서는 현실에 대해 할 말을 잃고 침묵하는 평범한 사람들(‹침묵의 고독›), 감각과 사유에 관한 논쟁을 펼치는 철학교수와 성직자(‹보이지 않는 것에 대한 대화›), 관람객의 주먹이나 머리를 넣어도 좋다고 제안하는 스티로폼 조각상들(‹완전한 미완성—손과 머리를 넣을 수 있는 조각›), 불완전성을 찬미하는 노래를 부르는 가수들(‹완전한 미완성―두 가수›), 김홍석 작가에 의해 이번 전시에 초대되었다는 미지의 미술가의 작품(‹사군자—231234›) 등을 만나볼 수 있다. 이번 전시는 우리가 평범하다고 믿는 것, 아름답다고 믿는 것, 완성이라고 믿는 것, 진짜라고 믿는 것, 전통이라고 믿는 것, 예술이라고 믿는 것 등 집단적 합의와 신념 체계, 학습된 관습을 하나하나 뒤흔들기 위한 정교한 장치처럼 구성된다. 김홍석의 작업에서 모든 것이 뒤엉킨 세상의 복잡성은 서로의 차이를 나누는 경계를 무너뜨리고 ‘새로 보기’를 촉구한다. 김홍석 작가는 진짜와 가짜를 교묘하게 섞거나 완성과 미완성의 판단을 유보하거나 창작과 차용의 경계를 흐리거나 하는 식으로 창작자로서의 신화적 작가상까지도 스스로 무너뜨리려고 시도하며 계속해서 질문을 주고받는 열린 결말의 이야기 속으로 관람객을 초대한다.

김홍석(1964–)은 서울 출생으로 서울대학교 조소과를 졸업하고 1990년대 독일 뒤셀도르프 쿤스트 아카데미에서 수학했다. 그는 개념미술가로 알려져 있으며 서구 모더니티의 유입 후 한국의 사회, 정치, 문화적 이슈를 번역과 차용으로 소재화하여 조각, 회화, 영상, 퍼포먼스, 설치 등의 매체를 통해 직‧간접적으로 비판한다. 그의 작업은 우회적인 비판과 유희를 담아내기도 하며 예술 안의 위계와 노동의 윤리에 대해 고찰한다. 주요 전시로는 국립 아시아문화전당, 국립현대미술관, 삼성미술관 플라토, 아트선재센터, 워커아트센터, 도쿄 모리 미술관, 로스앤젤레스 카운티 미술관, 가나자와 21세기 미술관, 뉴욕 구겐하임미술관, 서울시립 북서울미술관 등 국내외 주요 기관에서 작품을 선보였다.

스페이스 이수는 예술과 일상의 ‘새로 보기’를 제안하는 공간으로 2020년 이수그룹 본사 사옥의 로비를 재정비하여 개관하였다. 스페이스 이수는 이수그룹의 문화예술 후원을 통한 사회 환원의 일환으로 기획된 열린 공간으로서 도심 속에서 누구나 동시대 미술과 문화를 가깝게 접할 기회를 마련한다. 스페이스 이수는 예술이 ‘예술을 위한 예술’에 머무르지 않고 우리의 삶 속으로 확장될 수 있는 다양한 가능성을 모색하고자 동시대 미술과 함께 디자인, 가구, 패션 등 라이프스타일까지 아우르는 다양한 문화예술 콘텐츠를 소개함으로써 우리의 삶과 예술을 새롭게 바라볼 수 있는 다채로운 시각을 제시하고자 한다. 스페이스 이수에서는 기획 전시 외에도 ‘빛의 마술사’라고 불리는 작가 제임스 터렐(James Turrell)의 ‹펠리(Pelée)›(2014)를 상설 전시해 2시간 30분간 100가지 색으로 물드는 공간 속에서 빛의 물질성과 숭고미를 체험할 수 있다.

Gimhongsok―A Suit with Underwear on the Outside and a Dress with the Skirt Worn as a Hat

Space ISU, the cultural art space of ISU Group, presents the artist Gimhongsok’s solo exhibition, A Suit with Underwear on the Outside and a Dress with the Skirt Worn as a Hat. The exhibition runs from August 23 to November 10. Presenting artworks that reverse accustomed concepts and forms of art with a variety of media and formats, this exhibition intends to have the audience rethink what art is and to stimulate the audience’s imagination and a new way of thinking. This exhibition consists of the artist’s earlier unreleased works as well as new works. These works are a continuation of Gim’s previous works that explore and rearrange the hierarchical and dichotomous confrontation structures of the “inside” institutional systems from the “outside” and expand to the concept of “entanglement.” Through this exhibition, while reflecting the complex diversity of society, the artist shows an aspect of today’s art which is entangled with the art of the senses, the art of thought, modernity, contemporaneity, and with aesthetic sense. A variety of media works—including hyper-realistic figure sculptures, abstract sculptures, sound installation, texts, and paintings—are presented. This exhibition intends to be newly reconstructed as an entangled “piece of work” and hopes to present the process of “becoming” rather than the idea of merely staying in its state of “being.”

Gimhongsok (1964–), born in Seoul, Korea, graduated from the Department of Sculpture, Seoul National University and studied at the Kunstakademie, Düsseldorf, Germany in the 1990s. He is known as a conceptual artist who materializes social, political, and cultural issues in Korea following the introduction of Western modernity through translation and appropriation, and presents them directly or indirectly through media such as video, performance, and installation. His works are often indirectly critical and playful, examining hierarchy and the ethics of labor in art. His major exhibitions were held at home and aboard: Asia Culture Center, National Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, Korea (MMCA), PLATEAU–Samsung Museum of Art, Buk-Seoul Museum of Art, and Art Sonje Center in Korea and the 21st Century Museum of Contemporary Art, Kanazawa, Guggenheim Museum in NYC, Mori Art Museum, Tokyo, Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and Walker Art Center.

Space ISU is dedicated to presenting new ways of seeing art and everyday life. Launched in 2020 in the refurbished lobby of the ISU Group headquarters, Space ISU was planned as part of an effort by ISU Group to give back to society through the sponsorship of art and culture. Space ISU, designed as an open space in the heart of the city, provides an opportunity for anyone to experience and interact with contemporary art. Space ISU is dedicated to showcasing a variety of arts and culture contents from contemporary art to design, furniture, fashion, and lifestyle products in an effort to explore various possibilities for expanding the experience of art in our lives. Going beyond ‘art for art’s sake,’ Space ISU seeks to present new approaches to consider the relationship between art and life.
